With gas prices so high and the economy so low, the need for a job is crucial for many high school students. Many students have the desire to go out to lunch, buy the perfect outfit for the football game and, of course, buy gas for cars.
A popular job for many high school students is working at Sandwich Express. Candi Gorremans, a senior has been working there for over a year.
"I needed a job to pay for gas," said Gorremans. Gorremans is a three sport athlete and already has a tough job expected of her; she works 10 hours a week and still manages to stay involved. "My favorite thing to do at work is the drive-thru because it keeps me busy and goes by faster," said Gorremans. Sandwich Express employs many MHS students, five including Gorremans.
Having a job and playing sports will most likely interfere with school and outside activities.
"It's hard trying to find someone to fill for you when you have something going on that you want to go to," said Gorremans.
She saves 100 dollars a month from her pay check and spends the rest on coffee, food and Dr. Pepper.
Another popular job among students is Parks and Recreation refing. This job is very popular because they like to encourage young students in college and high school to come and assist the young community. One of many students, Jordan Gonzalez, has been working for Parks and Rec. for four years now.
"I wanted to help the kids succeed through athletics, and it's soccer related," said Gonzalez.
Working with little kids seems like it would be a tough job at this age but Gonzalez doesn't mind. He prefers referring the kindergardeners. Parks and Recreation does a great job supporting student jobs.
For a majority of the students, the job they have is usually their first job. Junior Austin House, however has past experience from his family farm. House now works at the Shell gas station in Lafayette.
"They are very flexible and easy going," said House.
Including gas, House also spends his pay check on clothing and snowboarding gear.
"I don't mind working at a gas station. I get free pop, but the weather does suck," said House.
The owners of many local business are for the most part very easy going because they understand young adults need for jobs.
There is high demand for jobs in the United States because of the economy. Between young adults and adults, teens want extra spending money and adults need to have a steady income coming in. It's a struggle to find a lasting job. The popular places for people to look for jobs are coffee shops, grocery stores, sandwich shops and gas stations.
To have a job, going to school and being involved is a large amount of things for a student to have on their plate. MHS students do a good job of keeping things organized with all the students who have a student job.
